Overview
Escape the bustling streets of Marrakech and venture into the heart of Morocco’s southern desert. This 2-day tour to the Zagora Desert is a perfect balance of cultural immersion, natural beauty, and adventure. Travel through ancient caravan routes, explore historic kasbahs, and experience a magical night beneath the stars in a Berber desert camp.
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Aït Benhaddou – Draa Valley – Zagora Desert
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the majestic High Atlas Mountains, winding through traditional Berber villages and across the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Along the way, take in panoramic views of rugged peaks and fertile valleys.
Pause to explore the legendary Ksar of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and iconic example of southern Moroccan architecture. This fortified village, with its earthen clay towers, has served as a backdrop for countless films and offers a glimpse into Morocco’s medieval past.
Continue toward Ouarzazate, often called the “Gateway to the Sahara,” where you may visit local film studios or admire the impressive Taourirt Kasbah. Then journey deeper into the Draa Valley, passing endless palm groves, lush oases, and centuries-old kasbahs that line the banks of Morocco’s longest river.
As you reach the desert outpost of Zagora, trade your vehicle for a camel caravan and trek into the dunes under the warm glow of sunset. Arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea and enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner under the stars, accompanied by the rhythms of local drumming.
Overnight: Desert camp in Zagora (standard or luxury tents available)
Day 2: Zagora Desert – Draa Valley – Agdz – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
Begin the day with the serenity of the desert and, for early risers, a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, ride camels back across the sands to meet your driver.
Head north through the Draa Valley, with opportunities to stop for photos, visit local villages, or simply take in the contrasting scenery of palm groves and red rock formations.
Enjoy a relaxed break in Agdz, a peaceful town nestled at the foot of the Jebel Kissane mountains, then continue your journey past Ouarzazate and over the Atlas Mountains back to Marrakech.
Expect to return with unforgettable memories—of camel treks, Berber hospitality, and the raw beauty of Morocco’s southern frontier.
